SUSTAINABLE, HIGH QUALITY LANDSCAPES
The landscape opportunities presented by our client’s site are our most important asset. Randall Thorp will use our skills in landscape analysis and landscape design to ensure the landscape value of the site is recognised and the landscape potential of the project is met.
Successful landscapes are born of a fusion of elements: people’s aspirations, environmental and human needs, the spirit of the place, and the use of appropriate style and imagination. Truly sustainable landscapes maximise the benefits to end users, neighbours and the wider environment.

Our ProfessionalismTo create truly sustainable landscapes, a holistic approach to design is required. By balancing the needs of the existing constraints, site features, green infrastructure, engineering and built development, we can ensure designs are appropriate for the end user, environmentally sustainable, and deliverable for our clients.

THE CREATION OF SUSTAINABLE, HIGH QUALITY LANDSCAPES FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PEOPLE WHO WILL USE THEM, THE WIDER ENVIRONMENT AND OUR CLIENTS IS OUR FUNDAMENTAL AIM
LANDSCAPE DESIGN IS FUNDAMENTAL IN CREATING AN ATTRACTIVE PLACE TO VISITThe landscape elements of a masterplan are fundamental in creating an attractive place to visit and the village site has an abundance of them. It is vital that these elements form the backbone of the proposals to ensure that the visitors have access to high quality open spaces and recreational opportunities on their doorsteps.
Attractive landscape and streetscape design is the key to creating spaces with a real sense of place and this should be promoted throughout the proposals for the holiday village. Our extensive experience with taking a wide range of masterplanning projects from concept to reality has enabled us to see at first-hand how design theory translates into the creation of living places and we will apply this to our work at Ellel Holiday Village. |
DELIVERING OUR SOLUTION
Retain and enhance the existing landscape features within the site
A wide variety of existing trees, woodlands and hedgerows are scattered throughout the site with a small number of ponds forming attractive features in localised areas.
The existing vegetation defines the pattern of the fields, conceals and reveals views to the wider landscape and ultimately gives the site its unique character. These existing landscape features are a huge asset of the site and should be incorporated as key features within the masterplan layout. |
Retain the setting of the heritage assets within the landscape
The site has a close relationship with the listed buildings of Ellel Grange and Kings Lee Chapel to the south, and the four listed bridges which cross the two arms of the Lancaster Canal adjacent to the site boundaries.
The masterplan will not only respect the settings of these heritage assets, but take advantage of the character they add to the site by making these features the focus of key views from the site. |
Enhance pedestrian
connectivity The existing Public Rights of Way will form the backbone of the pedestrian movement pattern within the site.
These, and a number of new connections will be set within landscaped corridors to provide a safe and attractive environment for walking and cycling throughout the site whilst also providing connections to the wider footpath network within the surrounding landscape. |
Create a series of focal green spaces at key point along the movement network
A series of focal green spaces will be provided throughout the site, incorporating key existing landscape features such as trees, woodlands and ponds. These will provide a range of opportunities for recreation and children’s play throughout the site, all easily accessible from the pedestrian network.
|
Use vegetation to enhance views and soften sensitive boundaries
The existing vegetation within the site will be complemented by new hedgerow, tree and woodland planting. This new vegetation will define focal green spaces, allow views of the heritage assets and surrounding landscape from key points.
This proposed vegetation will also enhance the ecological value of the site and add to the creation of a unique sense of place for the development. |
Creation of wildlife friendly water attenuation features in low lying land
The undulating nature of the site provides an opportunity to create a series of water attenuation basins in the lower parts of the site.
These will be set within the focal green spaces and will not only be attractive landscape features, but will improve drainage and enhance the ecological value of the site. |
